Since joining us in January 2025, Paul has blessed our congregation in countless ways. He has worked faithfully with our choir, shared his remarkable musical gifts in worship, and even helped us find, acquire, and care for our beautiful grand piano. Through his talent, dedication, and servant heart, Paul has enriched our worship life and strengthened our music ministry. We are deeply grateful for Paul's willingness to step in during a time of transition. What began as a temporary commitment became a much longer and richer season of ministry than any of us anticipated, and we have been blessed by every moment of it. As Paul and his wife look forward to embracing retirement, we celebrate this exciting new chapter in his life and thank him for all that he has shared with our church family. Knowing that Paul's time with First Presbyterian Church would eventually come to a close, we have been diligently searching for a new Music Director. Once again, Paul has been an invaluable partner in this process, offering guidance and support throughout the search. Thanks in part to his assistance, we are delighted to announce that Phillip McLellan has accepted the position of Music Director at First Presbyterian Church of East Jordan. A lifelong Northern Michigan resident, Phillip has dedicated much of his life to music, theatre, and the arts. He studied Musical Theatre Performance at Western Michigan University and has been active throughout the region as a pianist, vocalist, conductor, director, and educator. His experience includes serving as a church choir director, teaching with the Crooked Tree Arts Center School of Ballet, directing musical productions for Harbor Springs Public Schools, and performing with numerous community arts organizations. He currently sings with The Noteables chamber choir and continues to perform throughout Northern Michigan. Having grown up participating in the arts through local schools, the Bay View Music Festival, and Little Traverse Civic Theatre, Phillip developed a deep appreciation for the role music can play in shaping lives and strengthening communities. He is passionate about creating meaningful worship experiences and believes music has a unique ability to bring people together, deepen faith, and enrich the life of a congregation. Phillip is honored to join the First Presbyterian Church of East Jordan family and looks forward to sharing in the congregation's ministry through music, fellowship, and worship. To help ensure a smooth transition, Phillip will join us in worship on July 19 and July 26, serving alongside Paul during those Sundays. This will provide an opportunity for the congregation to meet Phillip and for the two musicians to share in this season of transition together. We invite you to join us in expressing our heartfelt thanks to Paul and celebrating his ministry among us. A special send-off and time of appreciation will be held on Sunday, July 26, following worship. As we give thanks for Paul's faithful service, we also look forward with anticipation to this new chapter in the life of our congregation. While she was completing her course work in religious studies at Muskingum University, she felt God calling her into ordained ministry. Upon graduation, she enrolled in the Master of Divinity program at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, completing her degree in 1994. Jaime is married to Jim Porter (who is also a pastor, serving in Elk Rapids, MI), and together they have 3 grown children. Jaime loves to be outside, and enjoys discovering new places to hike, bike, cross country ski and camp. Additionally, she is a certified yoga teacher and an avid practitioner and student. He graciously found a beautiful grand piano for our sanctuary and coordinated efforts to get it delivered. He has done a wonderful job with our choir and we are so thankful for his incredible gift of music when he is able to be here! Paul Ferris grew up in Boyne City where his father was minister at BC Presbyterian Church. During high school he played organ there and for a couple of years he also served as organist at FPEJ. After a few years studying music at Grand Valley State, he and his wife Debi moved to San Francisco where they spent 40 years working and raising a family. Paul finished his degree at San Francisco State University and worked as a free-lance musician, doing all manner of things musical, including a lot of church work.  They retired (well, Debi did) and returned to Boyne City in 2018. Paul has served most recently as music director at Petoskey United Methodist Church and is currently trying to retire.  We are very grateful to have Paul here during his semi-retirement! During times he is unable to be here, we have other gifted musicians helping us out! Thank you, Paul! Sarah started as Administrative Assistant in November 2021. Prior to that, Sarah was an Elementary Teacher and Assistant Principal in East Jordan and then a stay at home mom. Sarah graduated from Purdue University. She and her husband, Andrew are members of our congregation. Andrew’s grandparents and dad were also members of this congregation. She is the proud mom of Madeline, Mason, and Ryder. Sarah is an active volunteer in our community. Sarah enjoys her role of Administrative Assistant and is in the office most Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 am-2 pm. Trent grew up in First Presbyterian Church and is an active member of the church. He is the son of Shelly Malpass-Raymond and Jim Raymond. His grandparents are Cele and Bob Malpass. Through engaging teaching, supportive environments, and a close-knit small Junior Church, we guide children towards a deeper understanding of what it means to have a genuine relationship with God. We want kids to know that the Bible is full of interesting stories that matter in their lives today, that fun and games are definitely allowed at church, that worship can be fun, and that there are adults in the church who truly want to love and lead them closer to Jesus. In other words, we want them to know that where God is, life is a lot more fun! Each Sunday, we offer a Children's Message just prior to the sermon, where children of all ages are invited to engage in a brief lesson provided by our volunteers. Children are then encouraged to participate in Junior Church, located in the new basement gathering room. We use the Young Children in Worship program, which employs a sensory motor style of storytelling as its primary means of encountering God. God is experienced, not just learned about. The stories are told in a circle with wooden figures and gold "parable boxes" so that they are seen and felt. It provides the appropriate freedom for young children to respond to the stories of God through continued work with story figures and art materials. The space is specifically designed for children and follows an order of worship similar to the adult worship center, but tailored for their needs. Children ages two and up are welcome! Youth Group is held the second Sunday of each month following worship. Youth Group is for teens in 7th-12th grades. We study the bible, do service projects, and participate in fun activities and adventures! All are welcome...come join us! Don't worry, all the good stuff at our church isn't just for the under 18 crowd! We have plenty of engaging events and gatherings designed to build the faith and community of our adults as well. Young or old, Christian or not, single or married, man or woman—we've got a place for you! Our Adult Bible Studies are held quarterly. Check with us to see when the next Bible Study will begin! We also host devotional yoga each week. The Choir and Bell Choir also fun things to participate in. Additionally, each month we hold a Meet and Eat dinner! **We know that attending a church service for the first time can be a super scary thing. At First Presbyterian, you can expect friendly and authentic people, engaging worship, and preaching that applies bible principles to everyday life. Our next Bible Study will be focusing on the book titled "The Call" by Adam Hamilton. Follow the journeys of Paul, beginning with his dramatic conversion, as he spread the Gospel through modern-day Greece and Turkey. Travel to the early church sites and explore Paul’s conversations with the Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Thessalonians. In this six-week study, you are invited to experience faith through Christ’s greatest teacher and missionary. Join us on Mondays at 10:30 am starting July 8th or Tuesday evenings at 6:00 pm starting on July 9th! Each Wednesday, our choir meets to practice at 6:00 pm. Everyone is welcome! During Advent Season, our handbell choir practices and performs during the Christmas Eve service. This is a wonderful tradition! Each Thursday, Alcoholics Anonymous meets in the Fellowship Hall at 6:00 pm. These meetings are open to all.
